What is The Little Mermaid about?

You probably already know the story of The Little Mermaid unless you’ve been living under the sea. Disney’s 1989 animated version of the Hans Christian Anderson classic tells the story of Ariel, a mermaid who longs to live above the water and blend into the human world. Ariel falls in love with Prince Eric after saving his life during a shipwreck. She then deals with Ursula, the sea witch, to exchange her voice for human legs. However, there is always a catch to any good deal, and Ariel must kiss the prince and make him fall in love with her to avoid losing her legs and turning into a mermaid for good. In typical Disney fashion, the story is full of catchy tunes, and the live-action remake will be no different. In addition to the well-known classics, original songwriter Alan Menken collaborated with Lin-Manuel Miranda on four new songs.

Although it’s anticipated that the live-action remake would largely adhere to the animation classic, if prior live-action remakes like The Jungle Book and The Lion King are any indication, expect to see a few minor alterations to the story and characters.

Who plays Ariel in The Little Mermaid?

Singer Halle Bailey, who previously starred in the US sitcom Grown-ish, will play the title role in Ariel. She and her sister Chloe Bailey formed the musical combo Chloe x Halle, which has succeeded. In the 2023 musical version of Alice Walker’s book “The Color Purple,” which notably adapted into a Steven Spielberg film in 1985, she will play the lead female character.

Director Rob Marshall commented on the casting process, saying: Following a thorough search, it became evident that Halle had the unique combination of energy, heart, youth, innocence, and substance in addition to a beautiful singing voice evident that Halle had the unique combination of energy, heart, youth, innocence, and substance in addition to a gorgeous singing voice which all inherent traits required to fulfill this legendary part.

Who else is in the cast of The Little Mermaid?

After years of speculations, it revealed Melissa McCarthy would play the sea witch Ursula. Melissa McCarthy will surely give her razor-sharp comedic skills to the evil squid. Ariel’s father, King Triton, the monarch of Atlantica, will be played by Javier Bardem. Jonah Hauer-King, who played Prince Eric in Little Women, will play Ariel’s coveted prince. Noma Dumezweni, a British actress well known for her work in Mary Poppins Returns, will play the movie’s new lead role of Queen Selina.

Awkwafina and Jacob Tremblay from the television series Good Boys will voice Scuttle, the clueless diving bird who purports to be an expert on the human world, and Flounder, the anxious fish who is Ariel’s best friend, respectively, in the upcoming animated feature The Little Mermaid. The voice of Sebastian, the iconic crab and King Triton’s devoted servant who charged with keeping an eye on Ariel, will be provided by Hamilton actor Daveed Diggs.

How did they make The Little Mermaid?

Halle Bailey didn’t transform into a half-fish for the part, unlike what you might think. The COVID-19 epidemic caused a delay in filming, which finally started in January 2021 at Pinewood Studios in England. Additional footage taken on location in Sardinia, Italy, during filming, which lasted until July 2021. Marshall explained that Ariel’s underwater habitat could seen in a “real” way thanks to the use of a blue screen, and it had no effect on how realistically her hair appeared.

‘We shot against a blue screen, so we weren’t truly underwater,’ he says Deadline. She was wearing a wig cap. So the hair was digital, but it’s interesting because half the movie takes place above the water, so we actually have her hair. This means that they were working from an authentic hairstyle we designed for her in real life; they had to make it move in the water.

“It’s quite complicated, and I’m very picky about it because I want things to appear authentic and not fake. So we’re looking at every strand of hair to make sure it looks fantastic.”
