In this article, I’m going to discuss why leadership is so important. What does leadership mean to you? What areas, capacities of life you as a man be called as a leader.

In addition, a few of the characteristics, not all of them, but a few of the characteristics that I see in all great leaders.


Now, another thing that all great leaders have in common is the ability to rally people around a cause. That’s what I want to talk about today. We have the opportunity to help each other out as people.

Being a great leader is something all great men should strive to be. Your ability to lead and influence others not only says a lot about you as a man, but it also determines much of your success and the success of your team.

Importance of leadership

We all had examples in our lives as leaders that had been less than stellar. In addition, on the other side of that, we’ve had leaders in our lives who have been great examples of what it means to influence and lead others.

It’s so important that you are a leader. No one person ever got anything done alone. It takes a team to accomplish anything in life, whether it’s with your family or in your business or your career or your community. That’s why it’s so important that you learned how to be a leader.

At some point in your life, you will be called upon to lead others to help them get to a point where they need to be and to accomplish something that they would not have thought they would have been able to do on their own.

Leadership Responsibilities

All right, so let’s break it down where you might as a man be called upon as a leader. These aren’t in a particular order, but all of them are equally as important.

The first one that I can think of as called upon a leader is in your home. You may be a husband, father, wife or children looking to you as an example and leading that family to where it needs to go.

You need to be visionary and be the man that puts them on the path for success. Also, be able to raise kids in 18 years. I’m looking at my kids, who are seven, four, and two years old. 18 years isn’t a lot of time.

But if we can learn to be a leader, if we can develop the skills necessary, then those children that we have a stronger likelihood of being successful. Our marriages have a stronger likelihood of being successful if we can be leaders in our family.

Home Community

The other area that I can think what does leadership mean to you and where you’ll need to be a great leader is inside of your community. It might be a politician or it might be as simple as coaching your son’s football or basketball team.

Being a great leader, and helping the kids in your area, helping the community, helping your neighborhood is so critical. You need to learn how to help in your community. People are relying upon you.

You might be a leader in inside of your business

I can think about where you might be a leader is inside of your business. Now, whether you’re an employee or you run the organization, or it’s just you, or do you have a large organization, it’s so important that you lead.

You need to be a leader for your employees, coworkers and for your clients. I look at my financial advisory practice, and it’s me as the owner of the business. But my clients are asking that I lead them. They’re asking me to take them from point A to point B.

My Ability to lead, guide, and direct them successfully is going to determine their ability to retire and their way of life. So that’s where it’s going to be important that you understand how to lead and direct people inside of your business.

Spiritual leader

You might also be called upon as a spiritual leader, a leader inside of your church, and your job at that point is to help people who have really been struggling.

It could be a financial issue. Maybe a spiritual issue. It could be a relationship issue to get them again from point A to point B. We all know somebody who’s going through hard times. And also had hard times in our life.

We may be experiencing hard times right now. However, if you’re leading in a spiritual capacity, you’ve got to get them from point A to point B. You’ve got to help them navigate the hard times in life. The difficult things, the struggles that we go through.

You may also be called upon as a leader with your friends

I know that sounds funny because we think of our friends appear, but there’s going to come to the point in time where another man is going to call you that, that you know.

That needs some help. He needs guidance in a relationship issue. He needs guidance with some financial issues. Maybe he needs help. Building something around the house and your ability to lead, guide, direct, and know what you’re talking about is so critical when that friend gets on the phone and calls you for help.

Characteristics of an effective leader

Men of Conviction

I do also want to talk about some of the key characteristics that I believe all great men throughout all of the time. Have in common.

The very first attribute that I can think of that all great leaders share is that of conviction. A strong why, a strong purpose as to why they’re leading and what they’re leading in the first place.

If you’re leading your family and you want to be a better father, a better husband, you’ve got to have a conviction that leading and having a family and living a family life is essential. If you want to be a great leader in your business, you’ve got to have a conviction as an entrepreneur, as a business owner, as an employee, that what you’re selling or what you’re offering is a value to people.

It’s so critical. You cannot be in this fake it until you make it a situation. When it comes to conviction, people will see right through that and they will not follow you.

Men of Vision

Another attribute that I think all great leaders have is that a vision, great leaders always know the long-term play. They always have a long-term vision. Moreover, those goals set out because if you have any hope of accomplishing success as a leader in any area of your life, you have to know what the end result is.

What is the end game? Not only do great leaders have great vision. However, they also can articulate very well to their team what that vision is.

People are going to doubt you and there’s going to be hesitancy, and there’s going to be trials that come up as you’re leading without the vision and the ability to communicate that vision effectively to other people. They just won’t follow you.

Men of Service

The next attribute that all great leaders have is that they serve first. They are not thinking primarily about what’s in it for them, but they’re primarily thinking about what’s in it for my team.

What’s in it for the people who are following the people that I’m trying to lead and me? Without that attitude, I think many people will see right through that. You’ve got to be able to come with the spirit of service a servant leader.

So always be thinking about how you can serve the people who are looking to you for leadership. The people who are looking to you for guidance and direction in their life so you can navigate, and you can get them to where they hope to be.

Men of Action

Another attribute that I see in all great leaders is their ability to take action. I have never met a leader or come across a true leader, someone that I would be willing to follow without them having an ability to take action. Also, have to lead by example.

They have to set the path and cannot sit by in their corner office with their door closed, inaccessible to their team. Be accessible and have to get in the trenches with their people so that they can have any hope of leading them to where they want to be.

Men of Humility

Great leaders also have a sense of humility. Great leaders understand that they don’t have it figured out. I’ve run across many people who would be so-called leaders, except for that they are not humble.

They’re too prideful and too arrogant to believe that other people may have an advantage. May have a viewpoint or may have a skill set that would actually help the team as a whole.

If you want to have success as a leader, you’ve got to be humble. You have to look at your team, and you have to find out who has characteristics or who has traits or who has skills that will help your team as a whole succeed.

Men of Influence

Great leaders are humble leaders. Leaders also have a great ability to influence. Now, some people might look at that word influence and think that it’s about manipulation or getting people to do something they don’t want to do. That’s the furthest thing from the truth.

Influence is all about when somebody looks at you and says, I’m willing to follow that person because he knows what he’s doing. He knows what he’s talking about.

So in order to be a successful leader, you have to build up the skillset of influence.

The way you do that is by being proficient in that area that you’re leading. Work on proficiency and therefore, you will automatically build influence with your team or those you’re trying to lead.

Men of Innovation

Now, the last attribute that I want to share with you that I see in all great leaders is that of innovation. Whether you’re leading in your family or your business, or your faith or your community.

There’s going to come to the point in time where you’re going to run across an obstacle or a roadblock or a stumbling block, something that’s you need to overcome as a team.

Your ability to innovate to adapt at that moment is going to spell the difference between success and failure.

Are you an innovator? Can you look at things trade ugly? Can you be humble enough to ask your team if they have any new suggestions and ideas?

Because at the end of the day, it’s not about you and you being a leader. It’s about getting the job done. That’s what all great leaders do.

I want to talk with you today about something that has been on my mind a lot lately, and I’m sure you’ve noticed this as much as I have, isn’t it? That is this culture of negativity. This attitude is complaining is griping, bitching, and moaning about everything that we possibly can.

You can’t turn on the TV or look at a magazine or talk with somebody, or even talk with a friend without somebody complaining about it. I deserve this, or I should have this, or I’m not fast enough, not smart enough, not good looking enough, etc.


We have this negative attitude all the time. It consumes us. Now. I know why we do it. The reason we’re negative and the reason we complain, and the reason that we find faults and what other people are doing, and the reason we find faults in what we’re doing is that we as humans have a natural desire to advance.

There’s nothing wrong with that, but we have this natural desire to improve our station in life. There are some real reasons that it’s important that you eliminate complaining, and you eliminate negativity.

You surround yourself with people who are uplifting and positive rather than those people who are bringing you down. The reason that you need to be thinking about eliminating some of these things from your life is for two reasons.

How to be more productive at work

If you’re always complaining and you’re always negative, and the people around you are negative. You are not going to be as productive.

You’re not going to be as productive is because you’re letting something beyond your control, beyond your attitude, beyond the way that you react to things, have control over your life.

So either subconsciously or consciously, we throw up our hands and say, because of this outside factor, there’s nothing I can do, and we leave our success to random chance.

Missed opportunities

Opportunities will present themselves in their life, in your life, whether it’s through work or whether it’s family or whatever the reason is, or whatever the opportunity is, you will miss those opportunities.

If you’re negative, you miss those opportunities because you’re so concerned about what could go wrong and so concerned about the bad.

So concerned about the downsides that you’re not thinking about the opportunities. The advantages that we have. I want to share with you, especially as we’re getting close to Thanksgiving, some things to be grateful for. Reframe your life. Think about your day. I’m thinking about my day as I was preparing for this article.

The first thing I do every morning is I get out of this warm, comfortable King size bed. A bed that thousands of years ago, Kings didn’t even have access to. I wake up, I find myself in this climate-controlled room, and the fans on the electronics are going. In addition, everything is comfortable.

Then I stepped down outside of the out of bed and I put my feet on the carpet, this soft carpet that I could put my feet in that could roll around and I can wrestle with my kids in. I get into my vehicle. it’s an instrument those a hundred years ago we didn’t have, but it gets us from point A to point B in 40 50 60 80 miles an hour.

Thousands of years ago, there were people that were spending generations traveling, getting from point A to point B. Then I went into the gym and I did a workout that somebody else programmed for me. Then I came home. I was hungry, I opened the refrigerator, and there was food inside the refrigerator.

I don’t have to walk out and kill anything, I have to walk out and get my food, and I have to go milk the cow. It was there. It was ready for me. I got my eggs and put them on the stove. I turned the knob and fire started like that. We have controlled fire so much so that we can just flip a switch and fire started so we can cook our food.

I know it’s easy to think that these things are trivial, but it’s incredible the things that we have, the things that we should be grateful for.

I drove my car and I looked around at this beautiful scenery before I got into work and think about it in my office and thinking about work is this climate control-building if I get a little cold, I turn up the heat. If I get a little warm, I turn up the air conditioner and then I jump on my computer.

This amazing piece of equipment that gives us access to millions of people around the planet, internet and cell phones, and all of the things that we have and the opportunities to go to lunch.

Then I come home, and my family’s there waiting for me. My kids are there waiting for me, greeting me at the door, smiling, and ready to play with me, ready to bounce on the trampoline with me, ready to wrestle with me. We have dinner. I spend time with my wife, and I spend time with my kids. Then I get a book. Moreover, I have access to the minds of people from thousands of years and all of their infinite knowledge.

Moreover, I get to read that book in the comfort of my own home with the lights over my head and the electricity keeping me warm and the lights keeping everything lit. Then I go to bed in that warm, comfortable bed that I woke up in.

Reframing thoughts

There is so much to be grateful for so many opportunities, but as I said before if you’re always complaining and you’re surrounding yourself with people who are negative and complaining, you’re going to miss those opportunities.

You’re going to let life pass you by. and going to let your kids grow up and you do not know them. And let business ventures and opportunities. Scream past you because you’re so focused on building and growing that you can’t take a minute to recognize the opportunities that are there.

You’re going to kill your productivity because you’re always looking for the things that could go wrong rather than things that go right.

Therefore, this February, again, as we get close to Thanksgiving, I want you to think about the things in your life that you’re grateful for.

Wake up every day and find gratitude, find happiness, find joy in the things that you have, and when you do, you’ll live so much more fulfilled. You’ll build more. Well, you’ll have better relationships with your family and you’ll live a happier life.
